Install Paf 5.2 on Mac OS X! (A completely legal way to run Personal Ancestry File from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints without purchasing or installing Microsoft Windows) Note: The only thing you will have to buy for this is Codeweavers’ “Crossover” software. Which is typically about $20 to $30 and can be bought and downloaded from their site. I myself have purchased it 2 years ago from them and my credit card has never been hacked, so they seem to be a safe place to buy online. Yes it’s still buying software but $30 is cheaper than $200 for the full version of Windows 7 Home Premium!
Here are the steps: 1.) Download and install Crossover (www.codeweavers.com 2.) Download PAF 5.2 (www.familysearch.org) 3.) Open Crossover and create a new bottle. (I recommend picking Windows XP as the Windows version). 4.) File – Open in Crossover and find your Paf5EnglishSetup.exe in your Downloads folder. 5.) Follow the directions in the Paf 5 installer. THEN from then on, each time you want to use Paf 1.) Open Crossover. 2.) Go to the Programs menu and look for Family Search – Paf 5. 3.) ENJOY using PAF without having to buy Windows!
NOTE: I am not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints or an employee of Codeweavers. I am just a genealogy enthusiast who happens to have a lot of LDS friends and family who got me started on this software long ago. Although Codeweavers offers technical support for those who pay for their software if you have any …
@Thegerigfamofcali – I sent you a personal message to you Youtube account w/ some hopefully helpful info. Just let me know if you need any further help!
I appreciate your video tutorial. But, my crossover looks a little different than yours and I am stuck at a certain part. When I click on Crossover in my dock, a “welcome to crossover” window pops up with the only option of “install windows software”. When I click on it, another window pops up that says “select an application to install”. PAF is not located there. When I select a bottle, that is where I find PAF, but it still wants me to choose an application. Would appreciate any help.
At last we have PAF back on Mac. Can I gedcom Ancestry.com info into PAF. ??? Have been waiting a long time for PAF again. Can we buy a disk for that program. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. But video was pretty fast to take notes……
@taradactel No prob…although thank the folks at Codeweavers cuz they did all the work.
AHHHH THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!
That is awesome!!! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you! I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to run PAF on my new macbook. After following your instructions, I was so happy to see it start up and work just like under windows!
Thank you so much. I have been dying not being able to use PAF on my mac. You have saved me. Thank you again!
Did reinstall X11 from Sl disk (and rebooted) – but Crossover Games keeps saying it needs X11 to run – clicked recheck button – comes up with same message.
Got no answer at the moment. Not in apps/util folder. Think it ends up in library/developer etc somewhere down that line.
@ausdownunder, Greetings! Yes, Crossover (any edition) needs x11 as that is how it renders the “Windows” windows, if you get my drift. Snow Leopard should have installed x11 by default when you installed it (or when you bought your Mac). If it appears in your Applications > Utilities folder, then maybe a reinstall would work. Just pop in your SL DVD and go Snow Leopard Disc > Optional Installs > Applications > X11. Hope it works!
Let me know if you need any more help…
Just trying this out with demo of Crossover games — my Mac running Snow Leopard immediately came up and said it required X11 – X11 appears to be installed but perhaps it needs new install from SL disk.
@GrumpyOne1965 According to the Crossover official site, Roots Magic 4 has a gold medal rating, which means it should work as well as you would expect on actual Microsoft Windows. Since I don’t have a copy of RM4 myself, I’m unfortunately not able to test it myself so I can only tell you what they say. But it sounds like if you install it similar to how I installed PAF 5, it should work.
Will crossover also work with Roots Magic 4? This is GREAT information. Thanks!
This is a good one–thanks for the tip. Now I can take my genealogy on the road with me. A winner!
Thank you so much for taking the time and giving such clear instructions! I just successfully downloaded both Crossover and Paf 5.2 on my IMac, and I am very excited to get started on my family history!
